Marine Mirage
A proposal for an exhibition about coral reefs in the modern climate.
About
Marine Mirage is an imagined exhibition focusing on the beauty, science, and importance of coral reefs known also as "marine forests". As right now coral reefs are under a serious threat from a series of human induced stresses on our environment, I imagined an exhibition that would contrast the vivid imagery of coral reefs with the bleaching phenomenon that has been exponentially accelerating over the last few decades, and show that the future for the coral reefs is in our hands.
Modular motifs
The identity is inspired by a variety of colours and shapes taken from real life corals. Both actual photographs and more abstract vectors based on these shapes were used to build this identity, utilising distinct colours associated with each shape. The exhibition logo is created by combining the three most distinct shapes found in coral formations in order to show that coral reefs are complex systems built from many parts that compliment each other. The combination of vectors, photographs and colours allowed for a modular toolkit. Playing around with scale, blending modes and the variety in form was creatively a very fun process that allowed for lots of iterating and diverse, yet consistent outcomes.
Outdoor promotion
Posters, billboards, and banners focused on introducing the motifs, showcasing the identity's scalability on different formats, and conveying the important details of the event. In these deliverables, I focused on introducing key visual elements and motif pairings to leave a lasting, cohesive impression on the viewers.
In-exhibition experience
The indoor part of the identity focused on immersion and clarity. Throughout the deliverables, I put emphasis on the motifs intertwining in various ways evoking a feeling of being submerged in water, surrounded by life. The visual pairings established through the outdoor promotional materials were expanded indoors to produce a wide variety of assets that guide the visitors through the experience.
Brand presence
Merchandise developed for the exhibition leaves an impact on the visitors beyond the museum building. An accompanying website was branded together with the rest of deliverables ensuring consistency.
